The Transformational Power of Mindfulness:
A 2-Day introductory workshop in Hakomi Experiential Psychotherapy for counselors, psychotherapists, marriage & family therapists, social workers, physicians, body workers, healers and other helping professionals. This workshop can be used to fulfill the experiential pre-requisite for application to Hakomi Trainings.

Transformationis an organic movement toward wholeness that results from organizing into one's life, elements that have been previously organized out. In this workshop we will learn how to recognize and support in present moment experience transformative impulses that arise spontaneously, as well as how to use resistance as part of the transformation process. We will look at barriers to transformation and explore tools to help our clients work through them, especially the compassionate awareness of mindfulness that safely supports change without force. The workshop serves as an introduction to the Hakomi Method developed by Ron Kurtz; a mindfulness-centered mind/body therapy that pioneered the use of mindfulness in therapy.
Course Objectives. In this workshop we will:
- Learn Hakomi’s philosophical basis for working with barriers to transformation and learn skills that are immediately useable in working with resistance and transformation
- Understand and practice the skill of teaching clients to use Compassionate Awareness or Mindfulness in the service of their self-study and growth
- Understand and practice the skill of Tracking barriers to and opportunities for transformation
- Understand and practice the skill of Contacting barriers to and opportunities for transformation
- Understand and practice the skill of Working mindfully with barriers and opportunities for transformation
Instructor Greg Johanson, Ph.D., LPCis a senior trainer of the Hakomi Institute, editor of the Hakomi Forum, author (with Ron Kurtz) of Grace Unfolding: Psychotherapy in the Spirit of the Tao-te ching, and an internationally recognized leader in the integration of mindfulness and therapy.
